Headlines, captions, product copy, image variations, landing-page drafts, rough campaign routes, even full-on brand films can be generated at a pace that would have felt unrealistic not long ago.
That is progress. But it also shifts where the real advantage sits.
When production becomes easier, value moves away from sheer output. The brands that stand out are not always the ones making the most. They are the ones making better decisions about what deserves to exist in the first place.
That is where taste comes in.
Not taste as aesthetic preference. Taste as judgment. The ability to recognise what feels true to the brand, what feels borrowed, what needs more tension, what should stay restrained, and what should never leave the room.
<h3>Abundance changes the job</h3>
A lot of marketers are still looking at AI through the lens of productivity. Faster workflows. Lower costs. More versions. More content. More scale.
Once everyone has access to faster production, volume stops being a differentiator. The more useful question is whether the work still feels deliberate. Whether it still carries a pulse. Whether it still sounds like a brand with standards, not a brand assembling acceptable output at scale.
Ogilvy’s 2026 social trends report reflects that shift. Your taste then becomes the job, and what makes the work commercially valuable.
<h3>Taste is not aesthetic. It is judgment.</h3>

Deloitte Digital’s research is useful here. In its study, GenAI-generated emails performed broadly on par with those written by professional marketers on several measures, and they were produced faster and more cheaply. [3]
But one detail stands out.
Among respondents with a high willingness to act, the human-written emails performed better.
That gap matters because AI is already very good at helping brands get competent. Structure, clarity, speed, and coverage are increasingly accessible.
But brands are not built on competence alone.
They are built on recognisability. Emotional texture. The small signals that tell an audience somebody made a decision rather than settling for the most statistically likely version of the work.
That is what taste protects.
It is the instinct that catches copy that is technically right but emotionally dead. It is the reason one visual feels finished while another feels sterile. It is the difference between using a trend and leaning too hard on it. It is often what stops a brand from confusing activity with identity.
In that sense, taste is not a decorative quality. It is a filtering mechanism.
<h3>The middle is getting easier to manufacture</h3>
That becomes more important in an environment where synthetic sameness is easier to produce and easier to spot.
The danger is not that AI makes brand work impossible. The danger is that it makes average work effortless. And when average work becomes easy to generate, more brands risk drifting toward the same flattened middle.
Rejecting AI altogether would be the wrong lesson. The issue is not whether brands should use 
it. They should. The better question is what should remain firmly human.

<h3>What should stay human?</h3>
The answer is not complicated.
Humans should still own the brief, the point of view, the cultural read, and the final decision about what truly represents the brand.
AI can support ideation, accelerate production, and reduce friction. Used well, it creates more room for strategic thinking. Used poorly, it simply speeds up the manufacture of work that sounds familiar and looks finished.
Those are very different outcomes.
<h3>What brands need to protect</h3>
For brands, the implication is practical.
Judge AI not only by how much time it saves, but by whether it helps the team produce sharper work.
Protect the people who can tell the difference between content that functions and content that feels ownable.
Define your standards more clearly than ever. Not just tone of voice, but what you will never publish, what you want to be recognised for, and what kind of work still feels like you before the logo is even visible.
And remember that restraint is part of the craft. 
 
Good taste is often visible in what a brand chooses not to chase.
