Those numbers should make you uncomfortable. They should also make you curious. Because where there is a shift, there is a window and right now that window is wide open.

What is SEO &#8211; Search Engine Optimisation?
Definition: making your website easy for search engines to find, understand and recommend, so it appears prominently in Google results. It is not magic. It is clarity, structure and proof that you are worth recommending.
Think of it like a library. Google is the librarian. Your website is a book. SEO is the process of making sure your book has a clear title, a useful index, an appealing cover and is shelved where readers actually look. Better cataloguing leads to better discovery.
Every Google search runs through four steps: bots crawl billions of pages, index them in a vast database, rank each page against the user’s query, and then serve the top results. At this layer, we can influence keywords, site structure, page speed, mobile UX, internal links, backlinks and fresh content.
SEO is still the foundation. If you skip it, nothing else works. But it is no longer the finish line; it is the ground floor. The next two layers are where the real competitive edge lies.
What is AEO &#8211; Answer Engine Optimisation?
Definition: optimising your content so it becomes the answer, the one Siri reads aloud, the one Google pulls into the featured snippet at the top of the page, and the one surfaced in People Also Ask. This is not about ranking on a list; it is about being the single best answer.
Think of it like the information desk in a busy shopping centre. Hundreds of quick questions come in, and only one answer is given each time. AEO is about making sure yours is the one chosen, clear, concise and trustworthy. Clarity wins over cleverness.

There is no second place in AEO. Either your content gets read aloud, or someone else’s does. The winning formula is simple: lead with a direct opening sentence, include a specific number or fact near the top, and apply schema markup in your page source.
What is GEO &#8211; Generative Engine Optimisation?
Definition: making sure your brand and content are pulled into the answers that ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude or Microsoft Copilot give users. Not a blue link. Not a snippet. Your brand becomes part of what the AI says back.
Think of it like a highly informed friend who has read everything. Ask for a recommendation, and they do not list ten websites. They say, “Go to X, because Y.” GEO is about becoming one of the names they mention. Be quotable. Be recommendable.
Today’s new front doors to search include ChatGPT (800M+ weekly users), Perplexity (citation-first), Gemini (within Google Search), Claude (strong reasoning), and Microsoft Copilot (within Bing and Office). These are increasingly the first stop for research, comparison, and recommendations, especially among younger audiences.
Content ends up inside AI answers through four routes: training data, where AI models learn from billions of pages; live retrieval, where tools such as Perplexity and ChatGPT search the web and pull in sources in real time; synthesis, where the AI combines and rewrites sources into one fluent answer; and citation, where many tools reference sources inline. That citation is your visibility.
